Layering, Waterproofing & Care

The questions we hear most at the shop when someone is picking out a new kit.

How should you layer winter clothing? +
Our take

Use a three-part system: a moisture-wicking base layer (synthetic or merino wool), an insulating mid layer (fleece or a down sweater), and a waterproof, wind-resistant outer shell.

  • ✓Shell pieces like the Grands 3L jacket and Emmons 3L / Pascore 2L bibs have no insulation, so you build warmth underneath.
  • ✓Insulated pieces like the Nylie jacket and Team Issue pant already include a warm layer, so you need less underneath.
How do you choose the right winter jacket? +
Our take

Decide between a shell and an insulated jacket, check whether it is waterproof or only water-resistant, and make sure it fits well enough to trap warm air without crushing the insulation or your mid layers.

  • ✓Try it on over the layers you actually ski in, and reach forward like you are planting a pole.
How can I keep winter layers from feeling bulky? +
Our take

Layer thin, high-performance base and mid layers instead of one thick piece, and balance a roomier jacket with more fitted bottoms (or the reverse).

What do waterproof ratings like 5K, 10K, and 20K mean? +
Our take

The number is a hydrostatic-head test in millimetres: how tall a column of water the fabric holds back before it leaks. 5,000 mm (5K) handles light snow or a brief drizzle; 10,000 mm (10K) is the usual standard for resort skiing and average storms; 20,000 mm (20K) and up is built for heavy wet snow, rain and long days out in bad weather.

  • ✓The second number (for example 10K/10K) is breathability: grams of water vapour per square metre per day.
Why am I getting wet inside my waterproof jacket? +
Our take

If the jacket is not torn, it is usually your own sweat. When a jacket cannot breathe fast enough, or the outer fabric is soaked through, water vapour can’t escape and condenses inside, so you feel damp and chilled.

  • ✓Open pit zips or vents on the climb and close them on the way down.
  • ✓Refresh the DWR finish when water stops beading on the outside.
What makes a jacket truly waterproof? +
Our take

Waterproof fabric is only half of it. Sewing leaves thousands of needle holes, so a fully waterproof jacket has every seam heat-sealed with tape, plus water-resistant zippers or zipper flaps.

Should I wash my technical outerwear, and how? +
Our take

Yes. Dirt, body oils and sweat clog the breathable membrane and break down the DWR coating. Skip household detergent and fabric softener, which leave residue; use a technical wash instead, then tumble dry on low to reactivate the water-repellent finish.

  • ✓Always check the care tag first.
