The questions we hear most at the shop, answered with Reusch’s own ratings and the gloves we actually have.
Mittens keep your fingers together so they share warmth: the warmest option. Five-finger gloves give the most dexterity for buckles, zips and poles. Lobster gloves sit in between, with the index finger on its own and the other three fingers together.
Reusch rates every winter glove on its own three-step scale: Warm, Extra warm and The Warmest. For cold Idaho mornings and long chairlift rides, look at Extra warm or The Warmest.
Reusch marks each glove as waterproof or windproof. The waterproof ones use a membrane: GORE-TEX, or Reusch’s own R-TEX® XT, which Reusch describes as waterproof, windproof and breathable while staying thin, soft and stretchy. Windproof gloves block wind but aren’t sold as waterproof, so save them for dry, cold days.
Usually fit or moisture. Gloves that are too tight squeeze the insulation flat and restrict circulation, and damp gloves lose warmth fast. Leave a little room at your fingertips when you make a fist, and dry gloves fully between days.
Snug at the wrist with a little space at the fingertips, so you can make a fist without the tips pressing on the seams. Reusch uses numbered sizes, and fit varies by model, so try them on: we’ll size you in the shop.
Reusch advises against washing gloves: wipe them with a damp cloth instead. Let them dry at room temperature, then treat full-leather gloves with a leather care product (Reusch makes a leather wax). Store them somewhere cool, dark and dry.
Kids lose warmth fast and pull gloves off often, so a warm mitten with a long cuff is usually the easiest win for little ones.
