Goathead FAQ

Goatheads & flat tires in Boise, answered

What Treasure Valley riders ask us most about puncture vine and flat protection.

What are goatheads?

Goatheads are the spiky seed pods of puncture vine (Tribulus terrestris), a low-growing weed found all over Boise — along the Greenbelt, foothills trails, roadsides, and vacant lots. Each seed has hard, sharp spines that easily pierce standard bike tires and inner tubes.

When are goatheads worst in Boise?

Puncture vine drops its seed pods from mid-summer into fall, so goathead flats tend to spike in late summer and fall. The seeds can stay in the dirt for years, though, so Boise riders pick them up in every season.

How does Tannus Armour prevent flat tires?

Tannus Armour is a foam insert that sits between your tire and inner tube. It adds 15mm of protection under the tread plus sidewall coverage, so a goathead or thorn that gets through the tire stops in the foam instead of puncturing the tube. It also helps reduce pinch flats.

Does Tannus Armour work with tubeless tires?

Tannus Armour is designed to be used with an inner tube. For tubeless setups Tannus makes separate tubeless inserts — ask our Boise shop which option fits your wheels and riding.

What size Tannus Armour do I need?

Check the size printed on your tire sidewall and match it to the Armour size range — for example, a 29x2.20 tire uses the 29x1.95-2.5 insert. We stock the most popular sizes in Boise, and our techs can install them for you.
