Inselberg FAQ

Your Inselberg Questions, Answered

The questions skiers and climbers ask about Inselberg, answered with Inselberg's own specs. Have another? Ask us above.

Who is Inselberg, and is it a legit brand? +
Our answer

Inselberg is a New Zealand alpine apparel brand founded in 2021 to build technical gear for climbers, guides and alpine professionals. It co-develops its products with working pros, including Climbing the Seven Summits, New Zealand search-and-rescue professionals and year-round alpine guides. The Axiom Hardshell was developed with Aoraki Mount Cook Alpine Rescue. The name is German for "island mountain": an isolated peak left standing after softer rock erodes away.

What makes the Axiom Hardshell so waterproof? +
Our answer

Inselberg pairs a 140-denier face fabric with a 4-layer Toray Dermizax system: a microporous, water-repellent membrane plus a hydrophilic (moisture-moving) inner layer. Inselberg says this gives stable, long-term waterproofing and internal moisture control without relying on open-pore technology, and that it keeps performing even when the shell is saturated or heavily used.

Is the Axiom too hot for skinning or high-output days? +
Our answer

The Axiom is built first for storm protection: "prolonged exposure in severe alpine conditions." For uphill or high-output efforts it has pit zips for mechanical venting, and the hydrophilic inner layer moves moisture out. Honest answer: UKHillwalking's reviewer found it "isn't the most breathable of winter shells" (it's rated 10,000 g/m²) and that breathability comes second to durability. If most of your days are long, warm tours, come talk to us about a lighter shell; on storm days and in cold, wet snow the Axiom is the one you want.

Does the Axiom hood fit over a ski helmet? +
Our answer

Yes. UKHillwalking's reviewer describes the hood as exceptionally large: it fully encases you over a helmet, with chin coverage right up to your eyes. The trade-off is that it's a little roomy when worn without a helmet. Inselberg's Dual-Access chest pocket can be reached under pack straps, and the jacket weighs 596 g in size M (UKHillwalking).

How does Inselberg fit? Should I size up for layers? +
Our answer

Inselberg cuts the Axiom for alpine layering while preserving range of motion. Fit is personal, so the best answer is to try it on at our shop with the layers you actually ski in, or tell us your height, chest and usual size below and we'll recommend one.

What warranty does Inselberg gear have? +
Our answer

Inselberg backs its gear with what it calls the Inselberg 5-Year Guarantee, covering defects in materials and workmanship (fabric tears, zippers, hardware, delamination, stitching and seam failures). Normal wear, misuse, third-party alterations and loss aren't covered. Claims start with Inselberg's warranty form and proof of purchase, so keep your Ridgeline receipt; we're happy to help you file.

What happens if my jacket needs a repair? +
Our answer

Inselberg designs every product to be repairable and runs a Repairs Programme for tears, punctures, abrasions, zippers, drawcords, hardware, delamination and seams. Warranty repairs are free, and Inselberg provides a loaner jacket of similar design while yours is being fixed. Assessments take 3–5 business days and repairs 4–6 weeks, according to Inselberg.

Is the Centile Hoody down or synthetic? +
Our answer

Both. Inselberg body-maps synthetic insulation into the areas most prone to moisture and uses 850 fill power ExpeDRY down in the core, treated with gold particles that Inselberg says help the down dry faster and keep its loft. It has a 15-denier outer fabric and a 10-denier liner, and was developed with Everest guides as a technical midlayer for cold, harsh days.

What are the Binary Shell, Binary Bib, Euler and Affine? +
Our answer

They're Inselberg's new-season pieces arriving at Ridgeline now: the Binary Shell (men's and women's) and Binary Bib, the Euler Quarter-Zip and the Affine Vest. Inselberg hasn't published full specs for them on its own site yet, so we won't guess. Ask us below and we'll send you the details as soon as we have them, or reserve your size now.

Is Inselberg in stock at Ridgeline? +
Our answer
